Why Airfare Prices Are Surprisingly Low in 2025

If you’ve been holding off on booking flights because you assumed prices would soar this summer, it might be time to take another look. Contrary to expectations, airfare in 2025 is surprisingly affordable—and in many cases, even cheaper than pre-pandemic averages. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway or a long-haul international trip, this summer is shaping up to be one of the best times in years to fly.

The Data Says Prices Are Low

According to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average domestic airfare in 2024 was $384, a 2.3% drop from the year prior. That downward trend has continued into 2025—April fares were down 7.9% compared to the same time last year. And when you zoom out further, the long-term shift is even more dramatic: domestic airfares have fallen 13.2% over the past decade, even as overall inflation climbed over 35%.

This isn’t just a domestic story. According to the NerdWallet Travel Price Index, international flight prices are also easing. Flights to Sydney are down 23% compared to last summer. Fares to Stockholm, Oslo, and several other European cities are anywhere from 8 to 17% cheaper than in 2024.

Affordable Summer Destinations

Domestic travelers aren’t being left out of the bargain. A recent Kayak study via Southern Living shows that flights to cities like Atlanta and Tampa average around $262, while other warm-weather destinations—Raleigh, Fort Myers, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale—hover just under $300 round-trip.

If you’re bundling flights with hotels, Raleigh topped Kayak’s list for best value: a five-night stay with flights costs just over $1,000. Jacksonville, Florida, was a close second.

Looking to time it just right? The same data points to the May 19–June 8 and August 11–31 windows as sweet spots for low-cost airfare. August is currently projected as the cheapest month to fly, with average fares around $376.

When to Book for the Best Price

Booking ahead can still save you money, but the timing depends on your destination. For domestic flights, The Points Guy recommends booking 1–2 months in advance. For international trips, aim for 3–5 months out.
