New TSA Proposal: Alternative ID Verification May Come With a Fee
The Transportation Security Administration recently announced a new program that could affect travelers who don’t have a REAL ID or passport. According to a proposal published in the Federal Register, TSA is “launching a modernized alternative identity verification program for individuals who present at the TSA checkpoint without the required acceptable form of identification” such as a REAL ID or passport.
Under this proposal, passengers without compliant identification would pay an $18 fee to access the alternative verification system. The program uses biometric kiosks that verify identity through facial recognition and biographical information. The fee covers the technology costs and remains valid for 10 days, meaning travelers on round-trip flights within that window wouldn’t need to pay twice.
It’s important to understand that participation in this program does not guarantee access to the secure area of an airport. Travelers using this alternative method may still undergo additional screening and could experience delays at the checkpoint.
This development comes several months after REAL ID requirements took effect in May 2025. While most travelers already carry compliant identification, this program provides an option for those who find themselves at the airport without one.
The proposal is currently in the public comment period before any final decisions are made. For travelers booking airport transportation with us, we recommend confirming you have either a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or passport before your trip to ensure the smoothest possible airport experience.
